Why I became an Advocate, and Why I Studied Law 2

Image
The Squad (Mustapha 'The Danger Butt', Christian 'The Groundnut Boy:, Zaid; 'Mama Amina') and I, Ethel, grew stronger and became better. We dedicated our break time to teach groundnut boy and to supervise whoever is teaching him in all the sessions. Since we were in the same class, we made memory of every joke said in class, every assignment we did together and every trouble we bailed one another from. Infact, there was nothing stopping us, and we had an unbreakable bond. We all successfully got promoted to primary 4 and continued together in the same class. Most times we imagined ourselves going to the same secondary school, and hanging out with one another (that is if the available secondary school was not a separate school for both genders). It was common practice for us to save up money to buy things on a day of each week, but most of the money, came from Mustapha.  Mustapha was like a big brother, who selflessly cared for others. It was usual f...

A Childhood Inspiration of Law and Advocacy. (why I am an Advocate and why I studied Law)

Image
I am Ethel, Presently an advocate for the Vulnerable population.  I have not always desired to advocate for the Human rights of other persons; but certain childhood memories, made me know how much pain the vulnerable goes through every day, and how much joy it would bring them, if could love them too. Also, that we socially, culturally and academically include them in the society. Some years ago, I had just resumed Primary 3, having been transferred to brigade primary school in Lagos.  In those days in Lagos, the idea of Private schools and Nursery schools was a new line of education. And all schools then competed on equal grounds with government schools in all positive areas.  Unions or Pressure groups were not left out. Unions such as the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUC), where a big deal in the country then. The Spirot of unionism was so strong then that Unions and pressure groups great attention from the Government. Often times, the government ...

Self Exteem

Image
Self Esteem is confidence in one's own worth; self-respect.  Many times, people see and value themselves, by the standards and worth people attach to them or how they think or feel people take them. This has led to so many depressions. This because, most times, we are unkind to ourselves and presume wrongly what others think of us.  And sometimes, others are unkind to value us for whom we trully are. Yet, would you blame them for seeing what is not yet materialized?    You are you. The only one Apart from God, to see you for you.  And One thing is sure, we ought to have Confidence in our own worth; self-respect, and live for us; because one maybe great to others, but it is self achievement, that will make life worth living. In one of Jay Shetty's video, Some girls were asked about their self esteem, and it showed how much they live below positive self confidence. To me, I found out one important thing that takes away toxicity from me. It is the ...

Why Human Right and an Opened Society

Image
WHAT IS AN OPENED SOCIETY?     Open Society was described by Henry Bergson as a society that accepts and embraces all humanity. Karl Popper, further developing the idea adds that an Opened society is internally Democratic in nature, where Citizens are free to constantly and critically question or rethink accepted truths. This clearly leads us to Human rights. WHAT IS HUMAN RIGHTS?    HRs are the birthrights of humans by being humans and thus is inherent in all humans as inalienable rights, to be protected within and beyond the state.   WHAT ARE THE LINKS BETWEEN HUMAN RIGHTS AND OPEN SOCIETY?    The link between Opened society and the HR is that,  -They both upholds the rights of the human being to be free and protected within the state and Globally. This clearly checks the activities of Government against Totalitarianism, which is seen as a closed society, of which dangerous ideologies of Nazism, communism seem to monopolize and contr...

God has Limit

Image
There was a time I my life that all I could see was darkness, pain, failure and comdemnation. But then He told me: Grace!! Ethel, you are my Grace.  You are full of everything me that it is an abomination to underate yourself. Your strength is from me, so you cannot fail. I am in you, and all you need is in you. I laughed so hard and replied. Father, I know you are powerful, and I have you in me. but there is a limit to whom you are, or what you can do. Father, this darkness is too dark and there is none to deliver me. Oh! He told me his words and they meant nothing to me then. One who gave himself for me without anything left. He said...Divine Grace, A day will come, when all you have is light and no darkness. These unbelieve and pains will be in the Past. Brethren, I know God for Him. I know that He is that light that darkness cannot comprehend. I know that I dwell in that Light. I know now that I have been blessed with all spiritual blessing in Heavenly places in Chr...

The Day Before, Again!

Image
I cannot miss you. Those were my thoughts few days before you left... Again, on the day before you left, I knew some how that I would miss you; but not so much. I even told you that the one thing you prefer to eat, is the only thing, that when I see it, I would remember you... Those words hurt you, but you hide it and said "O!" Now everywhere I went with you, reminds me of you: The road we walked, the bus and places we talked about, Even walking, reminds me of You. And the most painful of all is, I was never able to hug you good bye. If you call, I will break down and tell you I miss you. No longer will I be that strong girl that will miss you again, If it means hugging you tightly, I would. Of it will give me a better memory than saying goodbye with a hand shake. Chai! I cannot believe I had the opportunity to hug you and love you, but "hard girl-Hard girl" has deprived me of it. Call back, come back lets play the day before again.
