United Nations, a toothless bulldog
United Nations (UN) was established after world War two in 1945. The UN charter was signed by 50 countries and it eventually had 51 member countries in the year 1945. Currently (2020), United Nations is made-up of about 193 member states.
Being a successor of the leagues of nations, UN came as a result of the devastation of Humanity and Human environment from the world war two. Hence it intention to maintain world peace and save humanity from the scourge of war.
Therefore, instruments and bodies where established to ensure that:
- There is peace throughout the world;
- That friendly relations among nations are developed and sustained;
- That nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms;
- That UN is a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals and all Human rights.
To this end, programmes are planned, ractified, implemented and voted for. And Crimes commited in breach of humanity and world peace, are prosecuted against.
This world be means that UN is a force to be reckoned with but in practice, this is not really the case.
Some times, we see UN being very Active and most of the times, we see UN very passive, which has earned it a comparism to a toothless bulldog.
Personally, i am not of the Opinion that United Nations (UN) is a toothless bulldog.
This is because practically speaking, UN is more like a tool and its ability to be terrifying is within the ambits of Political, social and economic interests. And where these are absent, it is no better than an earth worm.
We are all humans, but the humanity in Certain controlling Countries or Rich countries are more humane than others, the same goes for their welfare and environment.
Hence, United Nations can be a muscular Hench dog where the interests of the ones in control lies and a toothless bulldog or an earthworm where the interests of those in control does not lie.
Do have a great day ahead. Thank you
